MVHC is always preparing
June 29, 2012
Minnesota Valley Health Center (MVHC) took part in a Regional Disaster Exercise on Wednesday, June 27th. Across south central Minnesota, staff at healthcare facilities, county agencies and emergency management entities, gathered at their individual locations to participate in Operation Blackout.
The exercise was designed to test responses to a scenario in which all of south central Minnesota was without electricity for up to seven days. Each participating facility received simultaneous communications and scenario updates throughout the 2-hour program.
“It challenged us to look at what our response capabilities would be and how we would maintain services,” said Pam Williams, Executive Director of Patient Care. “Throughout the morning, we received a series of additional reports, called injects, that increased the complexity of the exercise and required additional discussion and problem-solving.”
This type of exercise is called a table-top exercise. It allows a large number of staff members to participate at their own facility where internal and external emergency communications are also put to the test.
